Driving License Application Procedure 2023


A prerequisite for a driving license is a learner's driving license. Minimum educational qualification of driving license applicant is 8th class pass. Age should be minimum 18 years for amateur and minimum 21 years for professional driving license. Must be mentally and physically healthy.

Process of Obtaining Driving License:

 Customer must first apply online (bsp.brta.gov.bd) along with required documents for learner or apprentice driving license. His learner driving license will be issued from the online system and the customer can instantly take a print out of his learner driving license from the system. Then after 2/3 months of training he/she will have to attend the written, oral and field test at the designated center on the scheduled date and time. At this time the candidate should bring the necessary proof, his learner or apprentice driving license (original copy) and pen to participate in the written test.

Documents Required for Learner Driving License:

1. Application in prescribed form Online application.

 2. Applicant's Photograph [Photo Size Max 150 KB (300 x 300 Pixels)]

 3. Medical Certificate (Max 600KB) by Registered Doctor. Click here for Medical Certificate Form]

 4. Scanned copy of National Identity Card (max 600KB)

 5. Scanned copy of utility bill (max 600kb), [If applicant's current address and National Identity card address are different, utility bill of current address should be attached]

 6. Scan copy of existing driving license [applicable for renewal of driving license/ change of class/ addition of class/ change of type of license] (Max 600KB)

 7. Legal action will be taken against him including cancellation of his learner driving license and smart card driving license if false information is provided while submitting the application online.

 8. Prescribed Fees, 1st Category-Rs.345/- and 2nd Category-Rs.518/-paid online.

After passing the written, oral and field test, one has to apply again for the smartcard driving license in the concerned circle office by paying the necessary documents and fee in a prescribed form. Smart cards are issued by taking biometrics (digital photograph, digital signature and fingerprint) of the customer. Once the smart card driving license printing is completed, the customer is informed about its acceptance through SMS.

Documents Required for Smartcard Driving License:

 1. Application in prescribed form.
 2. Medical certificate by registered doctor.
 3. Attested photocopy of National ID Card.
 4. Prescribed Fee (Professional- Rs. 1679/- and Non-Professional- Rs. 2542/-) Receipt of deposit in designated bank of BRTA.
 5. Police Investigation Report for Professional Driving Licence.
 6. 1 copy of passport size photograph taken recently.

Kinds of Professional Driving License:

 (1) For professional light (motor vehicle weight below 2500kg) driving license the candidate must be at least 21 years of age,

(2) for professional medium (motor vehicle weight 2500 to 6500 kg) driving license the professional light driving license must be in use for at least 03 years.

 (3) For professional heavy (motor vehicle weight more than 6500 kg) driving license, use of professional medium driving license should be at least 03 years.

[Note: To obtain Professional Heavy Driving License the candidate must first obtain Light Driving License after a minimum of three years after which he can apply for Professional Medium Driving License and Heavy Driving License after at least 03 (three) years of obtaining Medium Driving License- can apply for it.]

Driving License Renewal Process:

 (a) Amateurs:
 The customer should first submit the prescribed fee (within 15 days of expiry of Tk. 2427/- and after 15 days with penalty of Tk. 230/- per year) and apply to the specified circle office of BRTA along with necessary documents. Biometrics (digital photograph, digital signature and fingerprints) of the customer are accepted on the same day if the application form and attached documents are found correct. When the smart card printing is completed, the customer is informed through SMS.

 (b) Professional:
 Professional driving license holders are required to retake a practical test. After passing the examination, one has to submit the prescribed fee (within 15 days of expiry of Tk. 1565/- and after 15 days of expiry with penalty of Tk. 230/- per year) and apply to the designated circle office of BRTA along with necessary documents. The customer has to attend the specified circle office for taking biometrics (digital photograph, digital signature and finger print) of the customer. When all the processes of smart card printing are completed, the customer is notified through SMS.

Required Documents:

 1. Application in prescribed form;
 2. Medical certificate from a registered doctor (applicable to professional driving license);
 3. Attested photocopy of National ID Card;
 4. BRTA copy of prescribed fee deposit receipt;
 5. 02 copies of recent passport size photographs;

Procedure for Obtaining Duplicate License:

 Required Documents:

 1. Application in prescribed form.
 2. GD copy and traffic clearance.
 3. Receipt of deposit of prescribed fee (Tk. 875/- in case of High Security Driving Licence) in designated bank of BRTA.
 4. 1 copy of passport size photograph taken recently.
